Walking Safaris

Walks through the bush take place just after breakfast, on request, and is the best way of experiencing the ‘finer’ aspects of the bushveld. Your knowledgeable ranger will guide you through the fauna and flora of the Sabi Sand Reserve, pointing out insects, grasses, trees, and smaller species that are all an integral part of the greater Kruger National Park ecosystem.

Those with a passion for wildlife photography will be able to get various tips from their ranger on taking the perfect picture, while on their game drive or walking safari. The rangers are avid fans of photography, many of them having entered renowned international and local competitions with great results. Please do not hesitate to ask your ranger for assistance in this regard.

Bush Dinners

On warm nights in summer, guests may be treated to a three-course meal in the heart of the bushveld. As guests complete their evening game drive, they will be enticed by the essence of a burning fire, to arrive to a hurricane lit ‘dining room’ in the bush. With the finest in cuisine and service excellence, guests will enjoy an unforgettable feast under African starlit skies.

Cultural Tours  ( additional cost )

For those with a passion for Africa and an interest in its diverse and spontaneous culture, tours are offered into the local village, where guests will have the opportunity of embarking on a journey of invaluable knowledge and information on South Africa, its people and their way of life. For more information and tour rates, please speak to the lodge on your arrival.

Wildlife

The lodge is built on a hill overlooking a natural waterhole and the perennial Sand River is a sanctuary for many bird species and host to wallowing Hippo’s and basking Crocodiles as it gently flows to the heartbeat of Africa not far from camp. From this Hilltop Sanctuary, if you listen carefully somewhere in the distance you may be lucky enough to hear the roar of a Lion, companionless in his courage, friendless in his magnificence, or witness the reality of life and death in its fullness, as your eyes gaze into a marula tree, only to fall upon the elusive Leopard devouring the most graceful of all Antelope, the Impala. Or perhaps you stumble upon the Dung-beetle during a walking safari and pay homage to the courage and strength of this little creature, which has throughout time, competed with the charaxes, whom have always gained favour for their beauty.

Our afternoon drives stop for sundowner drinks and snacks at sunset before continuing into the night in search of wildlife. The drives return to the lodge in time for guests to freshen up and enjoy a drink before a sumptuous dinner on the deck.

Dinner is sometimes complimented by even more game viewing as animals come down to the waterhole to drink

Overnight: Rhino Post Safari Lodge  – Fully inclusive of all meals  ( brunch, high tea and dinner ), teas, coffees and twice daily game drives

Day 2:  Plains Camp Walking Safari

Safari game drives and walking Safaris

Each morning at the lodge you will receive an early wake-up call, and will have time for a cup of tea or coffee, fruit, muffins or biscotti before heading out on your game drive.

The ideal time for game viewing is early morning and the late afternoon and evening as this is when many wild animals and birds are most active.

On the drive you may encounter a wide range of wildlife and your guide will surprise you by spotting animals and birds that those unused to the bush may not even notice.

Midway through your game drive, your guide will stop for a tea or coffee break before returning to the lodge.

Once back at the lodge, brunch will be served. Brunch is usually served between 10h00 and 10h30

At 14h00 we check out and you will be transferred by 4×4 to Plains Camp (home of Rhino Walking Safaris), a trip which takes about 30 minutes and is a mini-game drive in itself.

After settling into your 19th century explorer-style luxury tent and being shown around the camp, high tea is served

After your rangers have been through the safety precautions, you will set off on a Safari walk which is always an exhilarating experience. All walks are led by two armed guides.

You will later return to the vehicle in time for sundowners and enjoy a night drive before returning to camp for a excellent dinner around the camp fire.

Overnight:  Plains Camp  – Fully Inclusive of all meals  (brunch, high tea and dinner), cold drinks, house wine and local beers, teas & coffees, morning walk and afternoon walk/game drive

Day 3:  Walking Safari

All walking trails are enjoyed in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat, with the average duration of the morning walk being between 3 and 4 hours.

During the morning walk there is a stop for a rest and light snack.

Walking through the bush heightens all the senses and offers visitors unrivalled opportunities to become immersed in the rhythms of nature.

A hearty brunch is served after getting back from the morning walk. Time to have a nap or enjoy the camps pool and viewing deck.

High tea is followed by an afternoon walk and then an evening game drive.

Drinks around the fire, followed by dinner complete the day.

Overnight:  Plains Camp  – Fully Inclusive of all meals  (brunch, high tea and dinner), cold drinks, house wine and local beers, teas & coffees, morning walk and afternoon walk/game drive

Day 4:  Safari adventure ends

After a light snack and tea or coffee you’ll be taken on another safari walk.

After the walk brunch will be served.

You’ll then be transferred to Rhino Post Safari Lodge for check out.

Then transfer back to Skukuza for your road shuttle back to Johannesburg arriving late afternoon.

Depending on your travel arrangements, you may need to forego the morning activity at Plains Camp (home of Rhino Walking Safaris).

Optional Sleepout from Plains Camp

Sleepouts are optional and need to be pre-booked.

Our Sleepout experience operated from Plains Camp or by special request from Rhino Post Safari Lodge, is unique amongst lodges in the Kruger National Park and offers guests the experience of sleeping under the stars on elevated platforms.

Sleepouts are totally weather dependent. The first guests to reserve a trail determines whether a Sleepout will be included on that trail or not. If the first guests who reserve the trail request the Sleepout then all guests on that trail will do a Sleepout. If the first guests to book the trail stipulate that they do not wish to do a Sleepout then nobody on that trail will be able to do a Sleepout.

Should you opt for the Sleepout experience, our trail guides will provide you with a light-weight backpack in which to carry a change of clothes and essential toiletries.  After tea, your guides will lead you on an hour-and-a-half walk to the Sleepout decks, stopping along the way to view wildlife.

The platforms are elevated about four metres above the ground and guests sleep on individual sleeping decks in a tent made of mosquito netting. After you have settled onto your deck, you will enjoy sundowners overlooking the waterhole. While your dinner is being prepared over an open fire the night sounds will bring another dimension to your bush experience. Your guides will ensure your safety at all times.

The four decks accommodate a maximum of 8 people and there are two bathrooms that each have a flush toilet and shower.

After coffee or tea and a light snack the next morning, you’ll walk back to Plains Camp for breakfast and a shower or swim.

Note:

  1. Sleepouts will be cancelled in the case of inclement weather
  2. The first guests to reserve a walking trail determine whether a Sleepout will be included on that trail or not. If the first guests who reserve the trail request the Sleepout then all guests on that trail will participate in the Sleepout. If the first guests to book the trail stipulate that they do not wish to do a Sleepout then the Sleepout option will not be available.

With 6 Luxurious and opulent tented suites, Hamiltons Tented Camp awaits to welcome you into the very special realm of the legendary Kruger National Park.

From open vehicle game drives with extraordinary rangers, to delicious dinners around the camp fire , a day in the bush is an unsurpassed experience.

Located in the Western Kruger area bordering Sabi Sands and the Mayeleti concession, Hamiltons Tented Camp promises fantastic game viewing !

To understand the difference between Kruger and the concessions, The Kruger National Park is state owned and the concessions are privately owned.

Most concessions share an unfenced border with Kruger allowing free movement of the game.

Day 1:  Your safari adventure begins

Check in at Johannesburg OR Tambo airport for your direct flight (one hour ) to Skukuza airport.

On landing , one may see lions along the airstrip.

Met by your ranger , and you will be transferred the 63 km to the camp.

One already sees wildlife en route.

We arrive in time for check in and a delicious lunch

Dining at Hamiltons is a classy affair from crystal glasses to uniformed butlers. Every care is taken by the proud chefs to bring you the very best of African cuisine,

Your ranger will then brief you on the next couple of days game activities.

Day 2:   In search of the Big Five

We have an early start to the day with a 05h00 wake up call.

Hot coffee and rusks are served before boarding the Land Rover.

It can get chilly so bring a warm jacket and of course a hat for when the sun comes out.

The animals are most active at this time , still engaging with the nights hunt.

Your ranger knows the terrain well and will often work with their colleagues via radio when an important sighting has been made.

There is always a good chance of seeing the Big 5 on these drives as the area is very game rich.

After the thrill of the bush we return for a excellent hot breakfast!

Then we have a most thrilling hour and a half experience walking through the bush with our armed ranger. This brings us up close to the wild animals all around.

No perfume or cologne please!  Clothing must be khaki or neutral colours.

We then return for an excellent lunch.

Time to relax for High Tea where a selection of fresh pastries is served.

The afternoon evening game drive then departs where once again we drive deep into the bush in search of the Big 5!

Botswana in Focus Photo Safari

Botswana in Focus Photo Safari

Combining The Best of The Chobe safari with the Okavango Delta really is the chance to see the Best of Botswana.

The North Western sector of The Chobe, where the mobile camp is situated, offers fantastic viewing of predators and plains game with the middle three days spent on the river for an overload of elephants, hippos, water birds and Fish eagles. The safari ends off with three nights in the pristine Okavango Delta hosted at our partner property Bushman Plains on a private concession.

You will be accompanied throughout by a Pangolin Photo Host who will be on hand to help you get the best photographs possible with our equipment or your own

Day 1 – 4    Your Safari adventure begins in Chobe

The mobile camp is hosted by one of our Pangolin Photo Hosts who will supply you with a camera and telephoto lens and show you how to make the most of every photo opportunity on the morning and afternoon game drives. The same photo host will be with you throughout this safari and the intention is that you will be a far better photographer at the end with an “armoury” of new photographic skills at your disposal.

This safari starts with a game drive through the national park in our custom 8-seater (everyone has a window seat) Landcruiser to the Pangolin Mobile Camp which is based in the North Westerly sector of the park. We make use of private campsites deep in the bush reserved exclusively for our camp. There are five large walk-in tents sleeping a maximum of eight guests (room for a couple of singles) with a dining tent that doubles as an editing area.

Each of the tents has twin (proper) beds with quality linen and a private ensuite bathroom behind. This comprises a toilet, basin and a bucket shower that can be filled to the brim with warm water straight from the campfire when needed. This is “glamping”!

Our chefs are masters at producing delicious meals from the nearby bush kitchen and the support vehicle has enough cold storage to make sure the drinks are always chilled. After dinner, there is time to sit around the campfire and enjoy this true wilderness experience.

The animals of The Chobe are generally very relaxed, which is one of the main reason why photography is so good, and you will often have herds of herbivores like elephants, zebra and buffalo wandering past the camp during the day.

On the fourth day, we will pack up the vehicles and head East towards the Pangolin Chobe Hotel.

Day 4 – 7   Pangolin Chobe Hotel

The Pangolin Chobe Hotel sits on the plateau overlooking the Chobe River and the Caprivi Floodplains below. Completed in 2018 the hotel has 14 rooms and is designed around a wildlife photography gallery featuring inspiring images from Africa and beyond.

With its proximity to the Chobe river, the majority of the game activities are done on the Pangolin Photo Boats with the same photo host who accompanied you on the first part of the trip.

By this time you will have improved your photography and will be feeling confident shooting on the manual camera settings. This will allow you more creative control over your images and we spend more time on the boats perfecting various techniques.

The boats seat 8 people all in a row down the middle with room for everyone to rotate 360 degrees. Each seat is has a custom camera gimbal on which we mount your camera and lens. We tend to use bigger telephoto lenses (150-600mm) on the river than on the game drives (100-400mm) as you don’t need to hand hold the cameras on the boat.

We do twice daily game activities on the river and also one or two game drives on a very productive part of the Chobe that we could not get to from the mobile camp.

In between the activities you can relax at the eco-pool or make use of our air-conditioned editing room at the end of the gallery. Your photo host will be on hand during the day to help you with post-production. Access to computers is limited in the Chobe so we suggest that you perhaps bring a laptop with you for image review sessions. Otherwise, we will give you plenty of memory cards to fill throughout the safari to take your images home with you.

Meals are taken as often as possible out on the deck or the interleading dining room with our fabulous chefs dishing out wholesome meals with locally sourced ingredients wherever possible. The evening meals vary from Braai (Barbeque) Nights to gourmet pizzas cooked in our woodfired oven. Most dietary needs can be catered for.

The Pangolin bar on the upper floor has spectacular views and the best cocktails in Kasane and is a great place to relax after dinner with your fellow travellers. Alternatively, the sunken fire pit is always a hit!

Day 7 – 10   Okavango Delta

On the seventh day it’s time to make our way the short distance to Kasane airport to board our charter flight to The Okavango Delta and the next destination Bushman Plains.

The flight time is normally just over an hour and flies along the border due West from the Chobe along the Selinda. You will be accompanied by your photo host who will be with you for the remainder of the safari.

Bushman Plains, like Pangolin, is owner managed and charming traditional bush camp in one of the most game filled and photographically productive parts of Botswana. The Bushmen who own and manage the camp are, as you would expect, amazing guides and trackers and know their homeland better than anyone else.

The camp comprises five tents and a communal dining lounge area. There are plans to extend the camp to also have a dedicated photo editing area at the beginning of 2020. The spacious tents each have a covered area at the front to relax and an ensuite bathroom at the rear. There is electricity in the rooms and hot water at all times. Don’t expect to find all the fancy add ons like private plunge pools and outdoor showers here. This camp is all about the wildlife experience and not the “extras”.

The camp has two vehicles (with four clients each) and is driven by a guide who is accompanied by a tracker perched on the seat at the front. This combination is a real advantage as the team works tirelessly to decipher the tracks and sign to seek out amazing sightings and photo opportunities. The Pangolin Photo Host at this stage will rotate between the vehicles on each activity spending equal time on each. The vehicles are in radio contact and tend to explore the same area of the concession on each drive. There are only three other camps on this vast concession, so we very rarely come across other vehicles.

We have been working with the guides to understand the needs of wildlife photographers as far as light and positioning is concerned but the real value is their experience and understanding of animal behaviour which means more often than not, we are in exactly the right spot with the right light at the sighting.

One extra activity that’s on offer at Bushman Plains is a walk with one of the guides, dressed in traditional garments, through the bushveld. The guide explains more about Bushman culture and the uses for the plants and trees that are found in the area. This is not to be missed – it’s fascinating and a real insight to a simpler more natural life.

In between game drives there is more time for image review with the Pangolin Photo Host but equally it’s time to enjoy the camp looking out over the plains and seeing what comes by.

The food at Bushman Plains is great with simple delicious fare. Sometimes meals are taken around the fire instead of the dining table with optional cutlery! This is the essence of Bushman Plains. It’s a wonderfully relaxing place to be with no airs and graces and an exceptional wildlife experience.

On the final day we head back over to the Kadizora airstrip for onward charter flights either home or onwards to other destinations detailed in the add-ons section of this page.

At the end of this safari we can guarantee that you will leave a much better photographer than when you arrived with a fistful of memory cards filled with beautiful images that you will treasure forever!
