Day 8 – 9 :  Exciting Safari

Morning safaris

An early morning call from the Ranger will wake you before first light, while the kitchen brews hot coffee or tea, and prepares cool fruit juices with a muffin, rusk or other freshly made delicacy. So begins the morning safari.

The bush is already alive, the air filled with birdsong as the rising sunlight dances off beads of dew on spiders’ webs. Nobody, not even the tracker who can read the bushveld like a book, knows what’s in store. He will watch the road for spoor, leaning forward intently to find any print left by a predator during its hunt in the dark. There may be hushed discussions in Shangaan between Ranger and Tracker, and brief radio interactions from one vehicle to another. Sharing information ensures that the occupants of each Land Rover have the best chance of a wide range of sightings during their drives – and also ensures control and responsible behaviour as the vehicles move in close to the animals.

Morning guided bush walk

Renowned for luxury experiences, Sabi Sabi isn’t all about phenomenal game drives and exceptional dining. Opportunities for education and adventure are definitely on the cards for those interested and energetic. On the morning safari walk you can be part of a small group that sets out on foot after breakfast. The walk is an opportunity to feel the pulse of Africa through the soles of your feet and experience the bushveld at close quarters.

Sabi Sabi boasts approximately 350 different species of birds, a paradise for birdwatchers. Raptors are plentiful, including 11 species of owl, the seldom seen cuckoo hawk and rare bat hawk. There is an endless diversity of trees, shrubs and flowering plants, and whatever the time of year, no two walks are ever the same.

Evening safaris

Evening falls and you prepare for the night safari. As the fierce heat of the day cools, the inhabitants of the bush become restless, and the animals move out of the shade of the trees. The call of the crested francolin reverberates through the bushveld and birds increase the volume of their song. You will be aware of colours softening to the beautiful, gentle hues that vary with each season. New scents fill the air and as the sun dips behind the horizon your Ranger will choose a spot where you can stretch your legs and enjoy sundowners alongside the vehicle. Watch in awe as the sky turns to the sensational vibrant reds, golds and oranges typical of an African sunset. There is a lull as the animals sense the transition into a time of increased danger. It is during evening safaris that the nocturnal hunters start stirring, and their prey needs to be alert for survival through the night.

During your safari you may be lucky enough to watch lions prepare for their evening hunt. Their long bodies stretch to ease muscles cramped from lying in the shade during the day; sinews are lengthened and claws sharpened against a tree; the vegetation is marked with scent, and the wind checked for smells; only then do they set off in a slow, loose-jointed, arrogant amble. There are numerous nocturnal hunters and on your evening safari, with the help of a spotlight, a leopard’s eyes may reflect back from a nearby tree. Or you may be lucky enough to spot another smaller predator, a genet, African civet or African wild cat. One can come across scenes at night that become etched in memory: elephants moving heavily but silently in the moonlight; the incredible flying leaps of bushbabies from treetop to treetop, and the red shine from a lion’s eyes as it looks up from its kill.

Overnight:  Silvan Safari Lodge ( 5 star )  or  Elephant Plains Game Lodge  ( 4 star ) – Fully inclusive of all meals, twice daily game activities, daily bush walk [ Local branded alcoholic drinks included at Silvan ]

Overnight: Rivertrees Country Inn – Bed  & Breakfast

Day 2:  Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park

After the Serengeti, Tarangire has the greatest concentration of wildlife in Tanzania and in the dry season the Tarangire River is a magnet for thirsty wildlife.  Large herds of elephants and migratory wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest and eland gather and not surprisingly the predators follow

From Arusha, depart early and drive to Tarangire National Park.

Close to Arusha, 118 kilometres away, Tarangire National Park gets its name from the river that threads its way through the length of the reserve.  It is famous for its dense wildlife population which is most spectacular between June and September, the dry period.  During this time, thousands of animals – elephant, buffalo, giraffe, eland, wildebeest, kudu, hartebeest and the rarely seen oryx – migrate from the dry Masai steppe to the Tarangire River looking for water.  Lion, leopard and other predators follow the herds.  Tarangire has the largest population of elephant of any park in the northern

During your private tailor-made safari, you will be accommodated in or near the parks as described below.  The days will be spent giving you the best game-viewing experience possible in each park, with either morning and afternoon game drives or full day excursions.  If you are opting to do a “drive-in” safari, the drives between parks may be broken with cultural visits to local villages or historical hotspots and further game-viewing, guaranteeing that your transfers are far from boring.  Your itinerary is fairly flexible from day to day and options may be discussed with your guide before setting off for the day.

Lunch at the lodge and enjoy an afternoon game drive in this fascinating little park teeming with wildlife returning to your lodge for a hearty dinner

Overnight:  Olivers Camp  – Full board accommodation, all drinks (except champagne, cellar wines, premium brand spirits), laundry service

Day 3:  Ngorongoro Crater

Today we depart Tarangire National park and make our way to Lake Manyara.  Enjoy a morning visit in this park with a picnic lunch before driving to Ngorongoro early afternoon

After lunch we make our way up the escarpment to the highlands of Ngorongoro with spectacular views of Lake Manyara below  -with a game drive en route to your next camp

The Ngorongoro Crater, at 2,286 metres above sea level, is the largest unbroken caldera in the world.  Surrounded by very steep walls rising 610 metres from the crater floor, this natural amphitheatre measures 19.2 kilometres in diameter and 304²km in area.  It is home to up to 30,000 animals, almost half of which are wildebeest and zebra.  Buffalo, elephant, hippo, hyena, jackal, lion, ostrich, serval, warthog, bushbuck, eland, hartebeest, reedbuck, waterbuck and huge herds of both Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelle are easily seen on the crater floor.

Thanks to anti-poaching patrols, the crater is now one of the few places in East Africa where visitors can be certain of seeing black rhino, with the number now approaching 25.  Leopard may occasionally be seen in the trees of the forest surrounding the crater, while cheetah are also present.  Countless flamingo form a pink blanket over the soda lakes, while more than 100 species of birds not found in the Serengeti have been spotted.  The crater, having been  declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which covers more than 8,300²km.

Overnight:  Lemala Ngorongoro Tented Camp  – Full board accommodation, house wines and spirits, local beers, soft drinks, juices and water, laundry

Day 4 & 5 : Southern Serengeti

The Serengeti together with Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Park form Africa’s most famous wildlife park.  The image of acacia trees on an endless grass plain epitomises Africa for many, and then add a Masai warrior and some cattle to the picture and the conversation need go no further. The annual wildebeest migration through the Serengeti and the Masai Mara is the largest mass movement of land mammals on the planet – with more than a million animals following the rains.  But that is not where the game viewing ends; large prides of lions, elephants and giraffes in grasslands, gazelles and eland to mention but a few

Breakfast , followed by check out

Enjoy a morning game drive in the Ngorongoro Crater,  including a picnic lunch,  before heading off to the  Serengeti , where you will be spending the following two nights

Enjoy a morning and afternoon game drive in Ndutu the following day

Overnight: Lemala Ndutu Mobile Tented Camp  – Full Board accommodation

Day 6:  Central Serengeti

Situated in the heart of Tanzania, the Central Serengeti encompasses the world-famous Seronera Valley which is known for its prime wildlife-viewing opportunities. This picture-perfect landscape is characterised by endless stretches of savannah-covered open plains, interspersed by rocky outcrops of granite, scattered with acacia woodlands and covered in a network of rivers and streams. The Central Serengeti forms part of the great wildebeest and zebra migration and provides an ideal habitat for a variety of wildlife such as giraffe, impala, waterbuck, hippo, elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, hyena, jackal, serval and much more. Popular activities include: game viewing, cultural tours, horse riding safaris, and hot air ballooning over the spectacularly scenic terrain

Day 1:   Timbavati Kruger National Park

Departure from Johannesburg on a Federal Air flight to the Timbavati concession of the Kruger National Park – where you will be spending three glorious nights at the luxury Kings Camp

The Timbavati is the largest private game reserve bordering the Kruger National Park. There are no fences between the Kruger National Park and The Timbavati Private Game Reserve  – and as the animals roam freely – the game viewing is superb.

The Timbavati Private Game Reserve is less populated with Private Game Lodges, making this area quite unique and special.

Enjoy a late afternoon Game Drive in open Safari vehicle with an experienced ranger in search of the Big Five , returning for a hearty dinner in the evening.

Overnight:  Kings Camp  –  Luxury Suite – Fully inclusive of  Luxury accommodation. Three meals daily. Tea & Coffee. Two game drives per day. Optional walking safaris. All beverages excluding premium brands, wines from our wine cellar. & champagne.

Day 2 & 3:  Timbavati Safari

SAFARI EXPERIENCE AT KINGS CAMP

Guests planning a Timbavati safari at Kings Camp can look forward to twice daily game drives in custom-designed safari vehicles, night drives with a spotlight in search of nocturnal creatures, guided bush walks and specialised bird watching safaris with expert guides. The Timbavati is especially well known for its frequent elephant sightings, as well as leopard and rare African wild dog. It is also home to over 350 bird species, making it a must-see destination for keen bird watchers.

Day 4:  Timbavati  – Sabi Sands Kruger National Park

Early morning game drive in the Timbavati, followed by a hearty breakfast

Enjoy a road a transfer via an unique picnic at Elephant Whispers, surrounded by these gentle giants,  to the game rich Sabi Sands area of the Kruger National Park, where you will be spending your last two nights on safari

The Sabi Sand is a private game reserve spans 65,000 hectares and is renowned for providing some of the best game viewing in Africa. While it is not technically part of the Kruger, the Sabi Sand shares a 50km long unfenced border with the national park, ensuring that animals can roam freely between the two reserves.

Spend two glorious nights on Safari at Leopard Hills

Overnight: Leopard Hills  – Luxury Suite – Fully inclusive of  Luxury accommodation. Two game drives per day. Optional walking safaris. Three meals daily. Tea & Coffee. All beverages excluding premium wines from our wine cellar. Laundry service

Day 5:   Sabi Sands Safari

Game Drives

Your knowledgeable and professional ranger conducts early morning and late afternoon/evening game drives, in search of Africa’s big game. State-of-the-art game drive vehicles, specifically designed for Leopard Hills, have individual bucket seats with fold down armrests, ensuring your optimum safety and comfort. Leopard Hills prides itself with the best rangers in the business, and they offer a safari experience like no other, from sightings of big game in their natural surroundings, to the smaller flora and fauna, which make this piece of ‘paradise’ a place we are privileged to call home.

Walking Safaris

Walks through the bush take place just after breakfast, on request, and is the best way of experiencing the ‘finer’ aspects of the bushveld. Your knowledgeable ranger will guide you through the fauna and flora of the Sabi Sand Reserve, pointing out insects, grasses, trees, and smaller species that are all an integral part of the greater Kruger National Park ecosystem.

Wildlife Photography

Those with a passion for wildlife photography will be able to get various tips from their ranger on taking the perfect picture, while on their game drive or walking safari. The rangers are avid fans of photography, many of them having entered renowned international and local competitions with great results. Please do not hesitate to ask your ranger for assistance in this regard.

Bush Dinners

On warm nights in summer, guests may be treated to a three-course meal in the heart of the bushveld. As guests complete their evening game drive, they will be enticed by the essence of a burning fire, to arrive to a hurricane lit ‘dining room’ in the bush. With the finest in cuisine and service excellence, guests will enjoy an unforgettable feast under African starlit skies.

Wildlife

The lodge is built on a hill overlooking a natural waterhole and the perennial Sand River is a sanctuary for many bird species and host to wallowing Hippo’s and basking Crocodiles as it gently flows to the heartbeat of Africa not far from camp. From this Hilltop Sanctuary, if you listen carefully somewhere in the distance you may be lucky enough to hear the roar of a Lion, companionless in his courage, friendless in his magnificence, or witness the reality of life and death in its fullness, as your eyes gaze into a marula tree, only to fall upon the elusive Leopard devouring the most graceful of all Antelope, the Impala. Or perhaps you stumble upon the Dung-beetle during a walking safari and pay homage to the courage and strength of this little creature, which has throughout time, competed with the charaxes, whom have always gained favour for their beauty.
