10 Day Namibia, Etosha, Zambezi & Vic Falls

Fully Escorted and Great Value

Highlights:

  • Etosha National Park
  • Bwabwata National Park – Zambezi
  • Kwando River
  • Chobe National Park
  • Victoria Falls

Note  – This is a Group Tour conducted with other tourists

Day 1 – Tues:   Etosha National Park

We will depart Windhoek in a northernly direction, passing cattle farming areas and bushland to the Etosha National Park, famous for its vast amount of wildlife and unique landscape. In the late afternoon, once we have reached our camp located on the outside of the National Park, we have the remainder of the day at leisure.

Overnight: Mokuti Etosha Lodge or similar

Day 2 – Wed:   Etosha National Park

The day is devoted purely to the abundant wildlife found in the Etosha National Park, which surrounds a parched salt desert known as the Etosha Pan. The park is home to 4 of the Big Five – elephant, lion, leopard and rhino. The Park was proclaimed as Namibia’s first conservation area in 1907 by the then Governor, von Lindequist. Despite the size of the Etosha National Park, only the southern edge of the pan is accessible to visitors. Game viewing in the park is primarily focussed around the waterholes, some of which are spring fed and some supplied from a borehole, ideal places to sit and watch over 114 different game species, or for an avid birder, more than 340 bird species. Popular game species such as giraffe, blue wildebeest, plains and mountain zebra, hyena, lion, leopard, antelopes such as kudu, oryx, eland, as well as some of the endangered species such as Black rhino, cheetah and the black-faced impala are all found here. An extensive network of roads link the over 30 water holes allowing visitors the opportunity of a comprehensive game viewing safari throughout the park as each different area will provide various encounters.

Overnight: Mokuti Etosha Lodge or similar

Day 3 – Thurs:    Kavango Region

After breakfast, our journey continues north-east towards Namibia’s lush Kavango region. En route, we stop at the Hoba Meteorite, the world’s largest known meteorite. We continue to Rundu, known for its rich selection of hand-made wooden crafts. With its magnificent woodlands and perennial rivers, the Kavango region contrasts sharply with the rest of Namibia. Large swathes of tall woodland, riverine forests, floodplains and reed-lined channels dominate the area. This is also the area where you will see many of the traditional huts and homesteads still in popular use today. At our lodge, we can enjoy an optional Sundowner boat cruise on the Okavango River.

Overnight : Taranga River Lodge  or similar

Day 4 – Fri:   Mahango National Park

After breakfast, follow the route of the Okavango River into the Zambezi Region. Lush, green, riverine – that is what the Zambezi region looks like. This juxtaposition is what makes Namibia the “Land of Contrasts”. The area is typified by perennial rivers and large forests of trees. Whereas most of Namibia is arid, this area is lush, the soil rich and the wildlife plentiful. It is a lively hotbed where one can see subsistence and cattle farming and the well-known traditional wood carvings. From the banks of the Okavango River directly at the footsteps of our lodge we have a magnificent view onto the Popa Falls, a series of small rapids in paradisiacal environment before arriving at our lodge on the banks of the Okavango river and close to the Mahango National Park where the following two nights are spent along the lush vegetation. The rooms award uninhibited views onto the Buffalo Park across the river. Optionally you may enjoy a late afternoon boat cruise on the Okavango River or short walk to a local Habukushu village. The lodge also offers Wellness treatments.

Overnight:  Shametu River Lodge or similar

Day 5 – Sat:  Mahango National Park

After an early breakfast, we travel into the Mahango National Park. Being Namibia’s smallest but most densely populated National Park, the visit will be rewarding in terms of wildlife and bird watching. The Mahango Game Park has a high number of elephants, as well as fair numbers of antelopes which are scarce or not seen in other parts of Namibia. These include the roan and sable antelope, tsessebe and the red lechwe. The park is also home to several sitatunga. The Mahango National Park is an excellent destination for bird watching with over 400 species to be spotted.

Overnight:  Shametu River Lodge or similar

Day 6 – Sun:    Bwabwata National Park

Depart the Mahango National park and travel across the Zambezi Region, (previously called Caprivi) to the lush woodlands of the Kwando River. Hundreds of elephants, large Buffalo herds and numerous antelopes roam these majestic riverine woods. With over 400 species of birds, this area counts as one of the best birding hotspots in the whole of southern Africa. After settling in, you can optionally participate in an afternoon nature drive that takes you into the Bwabwata National Park. Should the road conditions here permit, enjoy a scenic stop at the famous Horseshoe bend, where at times hundreds of game species gather to quench their thirst.

Overnight:  Namushasha River Lodge  or similar

Day 7 – Mon:     Chobe National Park

After breakfast, travel across the border to Kasane, a small and bustling town right on the edge of the Chobe National Park. The accommodation for the following two nights are in a special corner of the African wilderness, where two mighty rivers meet, a wetland paradise that is a haven for nature and wildlife. Discover the wonders of this magical destination. Here wildlife roams freely in profusion and diversity. It is home to the largest concentration of elephant in Africa, while other game consists of large herds of buffalo, puku, lechwe, bushbuck and kudu. Other significant species such as lion, leopard, wild dog, sable and roan antelope are encountered in many areas of the adjacent game reserve. In the afternoon we recommend an optional Chobe sunset river cruise along the National Park to experience the multitude of game species found along the banks of the Chobe River.

Overnight:  Chobe Safari Lodge or similar

Day 8 –  Tues:   Victoria Falls

Before traveling across the border to Zimbabwe there is still time to optionally take part in an early morning game drive through the Chobe National Park, offered by the lodges own activity centre. With a cup of coffee or tea enjoy the sunrise and natures awakening before departing on an open game drive with lodge rangers, exploring the national park and see the forage of wildlife along the Chobe River such as elephants, Lechwe, Roan or Waterbuck. Returning to the lodge breakfast is served on the terrace overlooking the river. Then depart across the border to the vibrant town of Victoria Falls and one of the most spectacular natural wonders – the Victoria Water Falls. The remainder of the day is at leisure to explore the town and its collection of art and craft markets on foot.

Overnight: Shearwater Explorer Village or similar

Day 9 – Wed:  Victoria Falls

Together with our guide, join a local guided excursion to Victoria Falls to discover why the Victoria Falls is one of the seven natural wonders on Earth as we explore it on foot. This dramatically beautiful event is accompanied by a deafening roar and fine spray that arcs up into the sky, giving the falls its local name: Mosi-oa-Tunya – the “Smoke that Thunders”. Afterwards, visit a craft market where handmade crafts of the local inhabitants (optional can be purchased before returning to the hotel, located centrally in town. Here the remainder of the day is at leisure to relax or participate in the adventure-filled optional activities

Overnight: Shearwater Explorer Village or similar

Day 10 – Thurs:    Departure

Depending on your departure flight, your guide will transfer you to the Victoria Falls International airport.

Day 1  Tuesday  Cape Town – Oudtshoorn

Depart Cape Town at about 08h15 and head north over the spectacular Du Toit’s Kloof Mountain pass en route to Worcester. From Worcester we continue along the R62 (Route 62 is the longest wine route in the world) through Montagu. We stop for a wine tasting and delicious lunch. In the afternoon we travel through the Little Karoo. Changing scenery from lush farmland to semi-desert areas make this a day full of surprises.

A warm welcome awaits us from the staff of the 3* Protea Hotel by Marriott Oudtshoorn Riempie Estate Hotel (or similar), where we arrive in the late afternoon for our overnight stop. Oudtshoorn is the ostrich capital of the world. Ostriches are found in great numbers and the region produces the best feathers, leather products and ostrich meat worldwide. But the world’s biggest bird is just one of the many attractions in this area of interesting contrasts. This small town is the commercial hub of the greater Klein Karoo region ( encompassing Prince Albert, De Rust and Calitzdorp )  and is situated in a beautiful valley between the Outeniqua and Swartberg Mountains

Overnight:  Marriott Oudtshoorn Riempie Estate or similar

Day 2  Wednesday  Oudtshoorn  – Knysna

Awake the next day to the freshness of the Karoo air. After a good breakfast we visit the world famous Cango Caves where we take a fascinating guided tour lasting over an hour. From the caves we travel to the Cango Wildlife Ranch (Crocodile and Cheetah farm) to learn more about frightening reptiles and other beautiful animals. Hear the awesome stories from the guide as we tour the farm with a chance to view cheetah, tiger, lion, puma, and jaguar. A short drive to the other end of Oudtshoorn brings us to Ostrich country and lunch at an ostrich farm. Today’s lunch – yes, you guessed it, includes optional ostrich delicacies. We’ll listen to the restaurant staff as they serenade us during lunch. After all this, the tour of the farm begins. We head down to the fields, where you will have the opportunity to learn interesting facts about ostriches. You’ll also learn more about the breeding habits and of the bygone days, when Oudtshoorn was in the midsts of the 1920’s ostrich feather boom.

The late afternoon takes us over the Outeniqua Mountains to Knysna. Here for the first time one can understand why this area is known as the Garden Route. As you drive over the summit of the pass, lush green vegetation awaits you. We’ll take a drive to the spectacular Knysna Heads where the ocean surges through the two sea cliffs to enter the magnificent lagoon. Get your camera ready! Our hotel tonight is the 4* Blackwaters River Lodge (or similar). Situated high on the hills above Knysna, you’ll enjoy dramatic, sweeping views of the Knysna Valley and Knysna Estuary to the Knysna Heads.

Overnight:  4* Blackwaters River Lodge or similar

Day 3  Thursday   Knysna  – Mossel Bay

The morning gives us some time to enjoy the quaint village of Knysna and we have a bit of free time in the Knysna Waterfront to take photos and shop for souvenirs, or to sit and absorb the beauty of the magnificent lagoon and the unique surroundings. At 10h00 we depart for Featherbed Private Nature Reserve on a guided boat trip (subject to weather conditions and boat sailing). You’ll be thrilled by the spectacular views of the Knysna Heads from the placid waters of the Knysna Lagoon. The sandstone cliffs rise out of the water revealing sea caves along the forested banks of the lagoon. You’ll find out all about the magnificent flora and fauna from your specialist guide before enjoying a delicious buffet lunch at the outdoor restaurant under a canopy of Milkwood trees.

In the late afternoon we will make our way to Mossel Bay where we visit to the Post Office Tree and Diaz museum where early pioneers left mail for the homebound ships to Europe. We spend a leisurely afternoon at the swimming pool or stroll along the beach before enjoying dinner

Overnight: 4* Protea Hotel by Marriott Mossel Bay or simlar

Day 4:  Friday    Mossel Bay  – Cape Town

The next morning, we visit Botlierskop Private Game reserve where we have breakfast before departing on a game drive. Experience close encounters with Rhinoceros, Lion, Buffalo, and Giraffe, rare Black Impala and many other species on an exhilarating three-hour guided game viewing drive in an open vehicle on the 3000-hectare reserve. From the reserve we travel via rolling hills to historic Swellendam. The town was founded by the Dutch East India Company in 1745 to exercise control over independent frontiersmen who migrated over the Hottentots Holland Mountains at the beginning of the 18th century. The district and town were named after the reigning Governor of the Cape, Hendrik Swellengrebel, and his wife, Helena Ten Damme.

In time, a village was established and Swellendam became the last outpost of civilization on the eastern frontier. Our lunch today is at a restaurant in Swellendam (La Belle Alliance). We stop at one of the local Farm stalls before continuing the scenic route back to Cape Town.
