Rovos Rail: 10 Day Namibia Safari

Rovos Rail: 12 Day Namibia Safari

12 DAYS • 3800km

This journey takes the train from the savannahs of the Highveld to the Atlantic in the west. Departing from Pretoria, the first stop is Kimberley, centre of one of the world’s famous diamond rushes where there is an opportunity to savour the 1870s atmosphere of the mining village. The train traverses the stark vistas of the Northern Cape to the Fish River Canyon – second in size to the Grand Canyon – and Garas Park with its quiver-tree forest. Guests continue across the untamed beauty of the Kalahari Desert to Namibia’s capital for a tour; Windhoek is a lively, cosmopolitan city with a strong German flavour. Then it’s a short flight to Sossusvlei, a stunning pan in the Namib Desert, for an overnight stay followed by a night in the game-rich Etosha National Park. On the last morning, the train travels the Namib to the perfectly preserved 19th-century German Hansa town of Swakopmund and Walvis Bay – an unforgettable end to a remarkable journey. Available in reverse.

From 2025, the Namibia Safari will be 11 nights/12 days.

Day 1: Pretoria

11h00  Depart from Rovos Rail Station, Pretoria. Travel south via the goldfields of the Witwatersrand. Guests may freshen up in their suites before joining fellow travellers in the lounge car or observation car at the rear of the train.
13h00  Lunch is served in the dining cars.
16h30  Tea is served in the lounge and observation cars.
19h30  Dinner is served in the dining cars. Dress: Formal

Please ensure that the Train Manager or Administration Deputy is in possession of your passport.

Day 2: Kimberley

07h00  Breakfast is served in the dining cars.
09h45  Enjoy a tour of Kimberley’s Diamond Mine Museum and the Big Hole. Capital of the Northern Cape, Kimberley is well known for the discovery of diamonds that led to its establishment in 1871.
13h00  Lunch is served in the dining cars. The observation car will be leading the train until after tea. Travel through the Karoo, a vast semi-desert region that was once an enormous inland sea. Over millions of years, volcanic matter
was ground down and deposited as silt upon the seabed to form what geologists call the Karoo system.
16h30  Tea is served in the lounge car and observation car at the front of the train.
19h30  Dinner is served in the dining cars en route to De Aar, an important railway junction. Dress: Formal

Day 3: Upington & Orange River

BORDER: NAKOP, SOUTH AFRICA / ARIAMSVLEI, NAMIBIA

07h00  Breakfast is served in the dining cars until 10:00.
13h00  Lunch is served in the dining cars. Enjoy a walking tour of Upington with a sundowner cruise on the Orange River.
19h30  Dinner is served in the dining cars. Border formalities take place. Dress: “Africa” Theme or Smart Casual

Attorney General of the Cape, Sir Thomas Upington was principally responsible for liquidating the business activities of all the Orange River pirates and capturing their leader, Klaas Lucas. When the desperadoes were finally chased away in 1884, the town was founded on the banks of the Orange River and named in his honour.

Day 4: Fish River Canyon

Please wear comfortable non-slip walking shoes for the excursions today.

07h00  Breakfast is served in the dining cars until 10:00.
12h30  Lunch is served in the dining cars. The train travels along the southern reaches of the Kalahari Basin.
14h00  Transfer (±60 min) to the Fish River Canyon.
19h30  Dinner is served in the dining cars. Dress: Formal

The Fish River rises in the centre of the country before flowing south into the Orange River on Namibia’s border with South Africa. It has formed the great Fish River Canyon – the largest canyon in the southern hemisphere
and probably only second to Arizona’s Grand Canyon in terms of size. The vast rocky landscape breaks up into a series of spectacular cliffs. Its size is impressive: 161km long, up to 27km wide and almost 550m at its deepest

Day 5: Kolmanskop & Luderitz

06h00  Breakfast is served in the dining cars until departure.
08h00 Transfer (±60 min) to the ghost town of Kolmanskop followed by lunch in Lüderitz. Lüderitz is known for its museum, colonial architecture and wildlife including seals, penguins, flamingos and ostriches. Look out for the illusive legendary horses rumoured to roam the Namib.
18h00  Return to the train. Depart for Keetmanshoop. The observation car will be leading the train until after dinner.
19h30  Dinner is served in the dining cars. Dress: Formal

Day 6: Keetmanshoop & Garas Park

13h00 Lunch is served in the dining cars bh. Depart for Mariental.
16h30 Tea in the lounge and observation cars.
19h30  Dinner is served in the dining cars en route to Rehoboth. Dress: Formal

Day 7: Sossusvlei

Please pack a small overnight bag for the stay in Sossusvlei. Tog bags have been placed in your suite for your convenience.

07h00  Breakfast is served in the dining cars until 10:00. Transfer to the airstrip. Depart in a light aircraft for a one-hour flight to a Sossusvlei lodge for overnight. After check-in, enjoy lunch and an afternoon at leisure.
16h30  Afternoon desert drive and a bush dinner after sunset. Overnight at the lodge. Dress: Casual

The dunes of the Namib Desert were created by sand carried by the wind from the coast of Namibia. The sand here is over five million years old and is red in colour due to its iron-oxide content. As the light changes during the day, so does the appearance of the dunes’ characteristic colour allowing for interesting photographs at any time. The wind in the Sossusvlei area blows from all directions causing the sand to form a star shape with multiple arms, hence the name “star dunes”.

Day 8: Sossusvlei & Windhoek

Please ensure your overnight bag is ready to be collected from your suite before the drive. Bags will bestored in the lodge’s baggage area. Time of drive to be confirmed. An early wake-up call with tea and coffee. Enjoy a desert drive with breakfast in the vlei. Return to the lodge to use the facilities, check-out and transfer to the airstrip.

12h30  Depart in a light aircraft for the one-hour flight to Windhoek.

18h00  Depart for Kranzberg.
19h30  Dinner is served in the dining cars. Dress: Formal

Situated in Namibia’s central highlands, Windhoek is an attractive city surrounded by clusters of hills and the impressive Auas and Eros Mountains. The Trans-Namib Transport Museum outlines Namibian transport history, particularly that of the railway. The Independence Memorial Museum focuses on the anti-colonial resistance and the national liberation struggle of Namibia.

Day 9: Cheetah Conservation Project

07h00  Breakfast is served in the dining cars until 10:00.
12h30  Lunch is served in the dining cars. The train travels along the southern reaches of the Kalahari Basin.

19h30  Dinner is served in the dining cars. Dress: Formal

Day 10: Etosha National Park

Please pack a small overnight bag for the stay in Etosha.

07h00  Breakfast is served in the dining cars until 10:00. Transfer (±60 min) to an Etosha lodge for overnight. Guests are welcome to use the pool and lodge facilities. Enjoy lunch followed by check-in.

19h30  Dinner is served in the dining cars. The train travels southwest towards the Atlantic Ocean. Dress: “1920s” Theme or Smart Casual

Etosha National Park (22270km2) offers great game viewing with many species of mammals, birds and reptiles. It gets its name from the Etosha pan (4760km2), which almost entirely lies within the park. Etosha is a large salt pan forming part of the Kalahari basin and means ‘Great White Place’

Day 12: Walvis Bay

Please ensure your luggage is ready for collection 15 minutes before arrival and that you have your passport.

07h00  Breakfast is served in the dining cars until 10:00. Traverse the Namib Desert towards Walvis Bay.
12h00   Arrive at journey’s end in Walvis Bay, Namibia.

The Namib Desert stretches for more than 2000km along the Atlantic coasts of Angola, Namibia and South Africa. The name is of Khoekhoegowab origin and means “vast place”. Having endured arid or semi-arid conditions for
roughly 55-80 million years, the Namib may be the oldest desert in the world. The geology consists of sand seas near the coast while gravel plains and scattered mountain outcrops occur further inland.

Please dress accordingly for game drives: mornings can be cool then warm up considerably; afternoons can be warm then cool down considerably.

Warm clothing, hats, comfortable shoes and sun protection are advised (season dependent). Rain capes are available.

We strongly discourage giving any form of handout to children while travelling. This action may have detrimental consequences to local communities. If you would like to give responsibly, we support many local charities and would be happy to assist.

11 Day Namibia Highlights – Luxury – Self-drive

11 Day Namibia Highlights – Luxury – Self-drive

Great Value & Popular  – Easily tailor made to suit your requirements

You could spend a lifetime exploring Namibia. Here we’ve assembled the highlights in the 11-day Namibia Highlights Safari – a journey of fascinating discovery that includes the Sossusvlei in the Namib-Naukluft Park, the Skeleton Coast, Damaraland and Etosha National Park.

The Namib Desert covers the entire Namibian coastline of over 1,500km and sweeps up to 200km inland. It is the planet’s oldest desert and has an astonishing diversity of landscapes and habitats including the Great Sand Sea of Sossusvlei and the surreal Skeleton Coast north of Swakopmund.

Damaraland’s scenic rocky outcrops and sandy riverbeds form a vast undulating landscape that shelters a variety of desert-adapted wildlife including elephant, rhino, lion and some rather hardy plains game.

Etosha National Park’s plains game come to drink during the middle of the day when predators are most lethargic; thus it’s not uncommon to have a collage of several different species in the same frame. Lions, elephants and several endemic species of antelope and birds – including 46 raptors – add to the game viewing excitement.

Etosha Zambezi & Vic Falls

10 Day Namibia, Etosha, Zambezi & Vic Falls

Fully Escorted and Great Value

Highlights:

  • Etosha National Park
  • Bwabwata National Park – Zambezi
  • Kwando River
  • Chobe National Park
  • Victoria Falls

Note  – This is a Group Tour conducted with other tourists

Day 1 – Wed:   Etosha National Park

You will depart Windhoek in a northernly direction, passing cattle farming areas and bushland to the Etosha National Park, famous for its vast amount of wildlife and unique landscape. In the late afternoon, once we have reached our camp located on the outside of the National Park, we have the remainder of the day at leisure.

Overnight: El Dorado Lodge or similar

Day 2 – Thurs:   Etosha National Park

The day is devoted purely to the abundant wildlife found in the Etosha National Park, which surrounds a parched salt desert known as the Etosha Pan. The park is home to 4 of the Big Five – elephant, lion, leopard and rhino. The Park was proclaimed as Namibia’s first conservation area in 1907 by the then Governor, von Lindequist. Despite the size of the Etosha National Park, only the southern edge of the pan is accessible to visitors. Game viewing in the park is primarily focussed around the waterholes, some of which are spring fed and some supplied from a borehole, ideal places to sit and watch over 114 different game species, or for an avid birder, more than 340 bird species. Popular game species such as giraffe, blue wildebeest, plains and mountain zebra, hyena, lion, leopard, antelopes such as kudu, oryx, eland, as well as some of the endangered species such as Black rhino, cheetah and the black-faced impala are all found here. An extensive network of roads link the over 30 water holes allowing visitors the opportunity of a comprehensive game viewing safari throughout the park as each different area will provide various encounters.

Overnight: La Rochelle Lodge or similar

Day 3 – Fri:    Kavango Region

After breakfast, travel north towards Namibia’s lush Kavango region. En route, you will pass numerous villages lining the roadside. Arrive at the lodge just outside to Rundu, known for its rich selection of hand-made wooden crafts. With its magnificent woodlands and perennial rivers, the Kavango region contrasts sharply with the rest of Namibia. Large swathes of tall woodland, riverine forests, floodplains and reed-lined channels dominate the area. This is also the area where you will see many of the traditional huts and homesteads still in popular use today. At our lodge, we can enjoy an optional Sundowner boat cruise on the Okavango River.

Overnight : Taranga River Lodge  or similar

Day 4 – Sat:   Mahango National Park

After breakfast, follow the route of the Okavango River into the Zambezi Region. Lush, green, riverine – that is what the Zambezi region looks like. This juxtaposition is what makes Namibia the “Land of Contrasts”. The area is typified by perennial rivers and large forests of trees. Whereas most of Namibia is arid, this area is lush, the soil rich and the wildlife plentiful. It is a lively hotbed where one can see subsistence and cattle farming and the well-known traditional wood carvings. From the banks of the Okavango River directly at the footsteps of our lodge we have a magnificent view onto the Popa Falls, a series of small rapids in paradisiacal environment before arriving at our lodge on the banks of the Okavango river and close to the Mahango National Park where the following two nights are spent along the lush vegetation. The rooms award uninhibited views onto the Buffalo Park across the river. Optionally you may enjoy a late afternoon boat cruise on the Okavango River or short walk to a local Habukushu village. The lodge also offers Wellness treatments.

Overnight:  Shametu River Lodge or similar

Day 5 – Sun:  Mahango National Park

After an early breakfast, we travel into the Mahango National Park. Being Namibia’s smallest but most densely populated National Park, the visit will be rewarding in terms of wildlife and bird watching. The Mahango Game Park has a high number of elephants, as well as fair numbers of antelopes which are scarce or not seen in other parts of Namibia. These include the roan and sable antelope, tsessebe and the red lechwe. The park is also home to several sitatunga. The Mahango National Park is an excellent destination for bird watching with over 400 species to be spotted.

Overnight:  Shametu River Lodge or similar

Day 6 – Mon:    Bwabwata National Park

Depart the Mahango National park and travel across the Zambezi Region, (previously called Caprivi) to the lush woodlands of the Kwando River. Hundreds of elephants, large Buffalo herds and numerous antelopes roam these majestic riverine woods. With over 400 species of birds, this area counts as one of the best birding hotspots in the whole of southern Africa. After settling in, you can optionally participate in an afternoon nature drive that takes you into the Bwabwata National Park. Should the road conditions here permit, enjoy a scenic stop at the famous Horseshoe bend, where at times hundreds of game species gather to quench their thirst.

Overnight:  Chobe River Camp  or similar

Day 7 – Tue:     Chobe National Park

After breakfast, travel across the border to Kasane, a small and bustling town right on the edge of the Chobe National Park. The accommodation for the following two nights are in a special corner of the African wilderness, where two mighty rivers meet, a wetland paradise that is a haven for nature and wildlife. Discover the wonders of this magical destination. Here wildlife roams freely in profusion and diversity. It is home to the largest concentration of elephant in Africa, while other game consists of large herds of buffalo, puku, lechwe, bushbuck and kudu. Other significant species such as lion, leopard, wild dog, sable and roan antelope are encountered in many areas of the adjacent game reserve. In the afternoon we recommend an optional Chobe sunset river cruise along the National Park to experience the multitude of game species found along the banks of the Chobe River.

Overnight:  Chobe Safari Lodge or similar

Day 8 –  Wed:   Victoria Falls

Early this morning we take part in an optional game drive through the Chobe National Park, offered by the lodges own activity centre. With a cup of coffee or tea enjoy the sunrise and natures awakening before departing on an open game drive with lodge rangers, exploring the national park and see the forage of wildlife along the Chobe River such as elephants, Lechwe, Roan or Waterbuck. Returning to the lodge breakfast is served on the terrace overlooking the river. After breakfast on the Chobe River Front our guide takes us across the border to Zimbabwe, where we reach our final destination on this Safari. The afternoon is available for an amplitude of activities offered in and around Victoria Falls.

Overnight: Shearwater Explorer Village or similar

Day 9 – Thurs:  Victoria Falls

Together with our guide, join a local guided excursion to Victoria Falls to discover why the Victoria Falls is one of the seven natural wonders on Earth as we explore it on foot. This dramatically beautiful event is accompanied by a deafening roar and fine spray that arcs up into the sky, giving the falls its local name: Mosi-oa-Tunya – the “Smoke that Thunders”. Afterwards, visit a craft market where handmade crafts of the local inhabitants (optional can be purchased before returning to the hotel, located centrally in town. Here the remainder of the day is at leisure to relax or participate in the adventure-filled optional activities.

Overnight: Shearwater Explorer Village or similar

Day 10 – Fri:    Departure

Depending on your departure flight, your guide will transfer you to the Victoria Falls International airport.

Namibia Northern Odyssey

Fully Escorted and Great Value

Highlights:

  • Damaraland
  • Visit to a Damara Village
  • Etosha National Park

Note  – This is a group tour conducted with other tourists

Day 1 – Fri:    Windhoek  – Swakopmund

A transfer brings you to the coastal town of Swakopmund, Namibia’s premier holiday seaside town. Upon your arrival in the early afternoon, you will check into your hotel where the remainder of the day will be at leisure. With its palm-lined streets and seaside promenades, Swakopmund is a popular holiday destination in Namibia. For the international traveller, Swakopmund is a bohemian mix of German architecture and African rhythms, a laid-back attitude mixed with a variety of activities. It is colourful, it is vibrant, but most of all it is pure fun.

Overnight: Hansa Hotel  or similar

Day 2  – Sat:        Swakopmund

Swakopmund is often fondly referred to as the “playground of Namibia”, it has numerous activities ranging from, adventure to exploring the fascinating features of the Namib Desert and the animals and plants that occur and survive here. There are a myriad of optional activities on offer from Swakopmund. You may choose to explore the town on own accord and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere or enjoy freshly baked pastries and coffee in any of the many cafes and coffee shops dotted around the town. Afternoon cake and coffee is taken very seriously and a delicious way to meet some of the locals. Alternatively explore the rugged, sweltering desert on a day tour, or view this awesome, environment from the air on a scenic flight.

Overnight: Hansa Hotel  or similar

Day 3 – Sun:   Swakopmund  – Damaraland

Leaving the foggy coast behind this morning, we make our way towards Damaraland. The journey takes us through the mining village of Uis and past the Brandberg, Namibia’s highest mountain, just shy of 2 600m. We then continue further into Damaraland, one of the least populated and most geologically diverse areas in Africa. This harsh, rocky environment is home to the elusive desert elephant, the black rhino and free-roaming antelope species. Arrival at the lodge will be in the afternoon, with the remainder of the day at leisure to soak up the atmosphere of the lodge.

Overnight: Ondjamba Hills or similar

Damaraland

Damaraland Quiver Tree

Day 4 – Mon:   Damaraland

Enjoy an early morning scenic nature drive through the wilderness area of the Otjimboyo Concession as we make our way towards the Brandberg, Namibia’s highest mountain. This is the best time to capture the perfect light of sunrise and catch the last mist engulfing the mountain. We then continue down into the dry Ugab riverbed, which we follow back towards the camp. Stopping under one of the majestic camelthorn trees we enjoy a light picnic lunch. On our drive along the meandering river we might encounter the elusive desert elephant that roam the dry riverbeds of the Damaraland, feeding on the nutritious pods of the trees lining the riverbanks. Arriving back at the camp we have enough time left to enjoy the scenery or follow one of the walking trails.

Overnight: Ondjamba Hills or similar

Day 5 – Tues:   Damaraland – Etosha National Park

During the cooler hours of the morning, we start our adventure filled day in the company of a local Damara guide, who takes us to Twyfelfontein, a UNESCO heritage site where Bushman communities engraved and painted over 2.500 pictures some 6.000 years ago! After a visit to the nearby Living Museum of the Damara, we proceed to the Petrified Forest – a geological phenomenon depicting the creation and metamorphosis of wood into stone amongst some of the oldest landmasses on Earth. Here we also see the Welwitschia mirabilis plant – the oldest living desert plant on Earth. Our onward journey takes us to the wildlife heaven of Namibia – the Etosha National Park. We check into our lodge located on the border of the Etosha National Park and can unwind after the adventure filled day alongside the pool.

Overnight: Eldorado Lodge or similar

Day 6 – Wed:       Etosha National Park

An extensive network of roads link the over 30 water holes allowing visitors the opportunity of a comprehensive game viewing safari throughout the park as each different area will provide various encounters..

Overnight: Eldorado Lodge or similar

Day 7 – Thurs:        Etosha National Park

Today your guide takes you on a game drive in the Etosha National Park. We may encounter animal species we have not seen the previous day and look forward to any new surprises at the different waterholes visited. The Etosha Pan dominates the park. This salt pan desert, which is nearly completely enclosed by the park and is lined by numerous watering holes, is roughly 130 km long and as wide as 50 km in places. During Etosha’s notorious dry spells the pan is a deathly place, lying parched and cracked under the molten African sun. It is claimed that game viewing is best during the dry periods as animals will then congregate closer to water. But even in the rainy season, the park remains an abundant wildlife haven. You then have the pleasure of experiencing the rebirth of life as the young foals, cubs and chicks are seen frolicking with their parents, and the sprouting new green shrubs and grasses create a pleasing green oasis. In the afternoon we travel back to our lodge, where we enjoy the rest of the evening at leisure. An optional open vehicle game drive can be booked with the lodge.

Overnight: La Rochelle Lodge

Day 8 – Fri:        Etosha National Park  – Windhoek

After breakfast, we travel back through the centre of the country exposing bush land savannah to the capital in the centre of the country. Time permitting, en-route we may stop at the famous wood carvers market in Okahandja or the craft market in the main street in Windhoek to pick up the last few souvenirs. Windhoek is a cosmopolitan melting pot of European architecture with African culture, with a variety of excellent restaurants to choose from. You will be dropped off at your accommodation of choice, or transferred to the airport for your outward flight.

Departure of the tour will be between 08:00 and 09:00 on the first day.
