After the Serengeti, Tarangire has the greatest concentration of wildlife in Tanzania and in the dry season the Tarangire River is a magnet for thirsty wildlife.  Large herds of elephants and migratory wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest and eland gather and not surprisingly the predators follow

From Arusha, depart early and drive to Tarangire National Park.

Close to Arusha, 118 kilometres away, Tarangire National Park gets its name from the river that threads its way through the length of the reserve.  It is famous for its dense wildlife population which is most spectacular between June and September, the dry period.  During this time, thousands of animals – elephant, buffalo, giraffe, eland, wildebeest, kudu, hartebeest and the rarely seen oryx – migrate from the dry Masai steppe to the Tarangire River looking for water.  Lion, leopard and other predators follow the herds.  Tarangire has the largest population of elephant of any park in the northern

During your private tailor-made safari, you will be accommodated in or near the parks as described below.  The days will be spent giving you the best game-viewing experience possible in each park, with either morning and afternoon game drives or full day excursions.  If you are opting to do a “drive-in” safari, the drives between parks may be broken with cultural visits to local villages or historical hotspots and further game-viewing, guaranteeing that your transfers are far from boring.  Your itinerary is fairly flexible from day to day and options may be discussed with your guide before setting off for the day.

After lunch we make our way up the escarpment to the highlands of Ngorongoro with spectacular views of Lake Manyara below  -with a game drive en route to your next camp

The Ngorongoro Crater, at 2,286 metres above sea level, is the largest unbroken caldera in the world.  Surrounded by very steep walls rising 610 metres from the crater floor, this natural amphitheatre measures 19.2 kilometres in diameter and 304²km in area.  It is home to up to 30,000 animals, almost half of which are wildebeest and zebra.  Buffalo, elephant, hippo, hyena, jackal, lion, ostrich, serval, warthog, bushbuck, eland, hartebeest, reedbuck, waterbuck and huge herds of both Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelle are easily seen on the crater floor.

Thanks to anti-poaching patrols, the crater is now one of the few places in East Africa where visitors can be certain of seeing black rhino, with the number now approaching 25.  Leopard may occasionally be seen in the trees of the forest surrounding the crater, while cheetah are also present.  Countless flamingo form a pink blanket over the soda lakes, while more than 100 species of birds not found in the Serengeti have been spotted.  The crater, having been  declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which covers more than 8,300²km.

Overnight:  Lemala Ngorongoro Tented Camp  – Full board accommodation, house wines and spirits, local beers, soft drinks, juices and water, laundry

Day 4 & 5 : Southern Serengeti

The Serengeti together with Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Park form Africa’s most famous wildlife park.  The image of acacia trees on an endless grass plain epitomises Africa for many, and then add a Masai warrior and some cattle to the picture and the conversation need go no further. The annual wildebeest migration through the Serengeti and the Masai Mara is the largest mass movement of land mammals on the planet – with more than a million animals following the rains.  But that is not where the game viewing ends; large prides of lions, elephants and giraffes in grasslands, gazelles and eland to mention but a few

6 Nights Pinnacles, Rivers & Plains – Karisia, Kenya

Karisia – 6 Nights Pinnacles, Rivers & Plains – Kenya

This walking safari explores an area we call the Lower Ewaso Wilderness, defined by its roadless, steep country that borders our main river in the area, the Ewaso Nyiro River. This safari we offer like all our others as an exclusive trip but also as a group departure.

Sandwiched between Mount Kenya and the northern deserts, Laikipia is where Kenya’s wild and semi-arid northern frontier country begins. The region is made up of privately owned and community ranches centred around the Laikipia National Reserve. Known as one of Kenya’s best safari areas, the high plains of Laikipia feature vast open stretches of African savanna scattered with abundant game including: Grevy’s zebras, black rhino, lion, leopard, wild dogs, buffalo and thousands of elephants. Visitors can enjoy a luxury safari experience at a private lodge or stay in the worthwhile community-run lodges which support the local Samburu and Ilaikipiak and Mokogodo Maasai communities.

  • DIFFICULTY:              Moderate/Energetic
  • WILDLIFE:                  No Plains Game. Good for Birds
  • LANDSCAPES:          Excellent
  • CULTURE:                  Excellent
  • GREAT FOR KIDS:     For older Kids
  • DISTANCE:                 12-16 km each morning

Day  1:  Karisia Nantodo Camp

From Nanyuki you will be met by a Karisia Guide and a driver and driven 3 hours to the start of our walk. It is not a long walk to the first camp, descending a winding sand river that passes close under a beautiful granite pinnacle called Nantodo. At the junction of the sand river and the Ewaso Nyiro river you will see camp set up under some shady umbrella-shaped Acacia trees. Nantodo rises abruptly out of arid plains and it is a landmark for hundreds of kilometres.  After a refreshing lunch and a relaxing afternoon in the shade we will might hike up Nantodo and at the top toast the the Mathews Range and the Karisia Hills to our North. You and your guide will scan below for Greater Kudu or Elephant herds. Back at camp hot showers and cool drinks will be waiting for you. Dinner under the stars with the sound of the Nightjars serenade.

Nantodo camp is at the junction of a wide sand river and the Ewaso Nyiro river under some shady umbrella-shaped Acacia trees. Behind the camp beautiful granite pinnacle, Nantodo rises abruptly out of the arid plains and it is a landmark for miles and miles.

Day 2:  Karisia Ngain Suisui Camp

We will wake up very early and set off as the sun is rising; winding our way up the sand river hoping to see Klipspringers, Verreaux Eagle Owls, warthogs and elephants as they head for shady places. We will slowly walk up hill to our campsite on a ridge next to the pinnacle. Once it cools off we will walk up the awesome pinnacle called Ngai Suisui that has a dramatic 360 degree view of the area and is also the nesting site for a pair of Verreaux Eagles. Sundowners here always feel good!

The campsite is near Ngai Suisui, the awesome pinnacle that juts out of the landscape. Ngai Suisui means ‘The Place where God blows the Wind’ that has a dramatic 360 degree view.

 Day 3: Karisia Nagaratat Camp

We will wake with the rising sun and walk down a dramatic valley to the river to a serene spot called Namasaa. The landscape is spectacular and we will walk along the rivers edge under some enormous Neutonia Trees, watching out for hippos in the deep pools before climbing out of the valley up a rocky river course where the fig trees cling to rocks and Klipspringers perch high on the rocks above. We break out of the valley and on to some rolling country where we will look for elephant and the peculiar Pancake Tortoises that live in cracks in the rocks. From camp we will hopefully see the local herds bringing their livestock to drink and in the evening meander along the river looking at the colourful birds.

After a hot shower under the stars dinner is served on the sand bank of the river.

A secluded camp under some towering fig trees on the Ewaso River. This is one of the main crossing points on this dramatic part of the Ewaso River and you sometimes see warriors bringing their livestock to drink. Greater Kudu and Elephants love this area and in the evenings you can search with flashlights for the shining eyes of the crocodiles in the river. At night you are serenaded by the Pearl Spotted Owlet.

Day 4: Leshashi  – Karisia Nalarai Camp

You will walk on upstream looking out for Greater Kudu, Waterbuck, Elephant and the incredible birds and scenery along the way and arrive at your camp by lunchtime. We can cool off in the pools and in the evening you will walk slowly along the river looking for an elusive local Leopard or watch the Baboons as they come to roost on the cliffs in the evening.

The camp is set on a sweeping corner of the Ewaso Nyiro River looking west at rocky cliffs and north to a granite outcrop called Lotim.

Day 5 – 6:  Karisia Tumaren Camp

We will walk out of the valley early and drive to Tumaren Camp for a bush brunch and a night of luxury in the huge tents with sweeping views across to the Laikipia Plateau, Mt Kenya and the Aberdares. The abundant plains game here will compliment the more reclusive denizens of the lower Ewaso.

In the afternoon we will head out on a drive or a walk and a night game drive could easily turn up some good predators like a Leopard or else an interesting nocturnal animal, like a Porcupine, an Aardvark or a Zorilla

Day 7:  Departure

Game drive along and over the Laikipia Plateau to Nanyuki in time for any connections for onward travel. For those that would like to extend a second night at Tumaren, this can be easily arranged.
