The Victoria Falls Hotel

The Victoria Falls Hotel

General

The Victoria Falls Hotel, popularly known as “the grand old lady of the Falls”, is situated in the Victoria Falls National Park, a world heritage site, and is a member of the exclusive Leading Hotels of the World group. It is one of only three IS0-accredited hotels in Zimbabwe.

The Edwardian-style five-star hotel, built in 1904, combines the charm of the old with the convenience of the new. Set in lush tropical gardens with lily ponds, palm trees and semi-tropical shrubs, it provides the tranquillity and seclusion that many guests seek. The famous Victoria Falls are just a ten-minute walk away using the hotel’s private pathway, and “the smoke that thunders” or “Mosi-O-Tunya” in the local dialect, is clearly audible and visible from this luxurious landmark.

World-class service, and food and beverage choice and preparation second to none, make the hotel a magnet for international visitors and locals alike. The opulent Livingstone Room for fine dining and dancing, the Jungle Junction with its famous breakfast and dinner buffets and ethnic entertainment in the evenings, offer variety and wide choice. Stanley’s Terrace, with its clear view of the Victoria Falls Bridge, connecting Zimbabwe and Zambia, is renowned for its cocktails and afternoon teas. The Terrace has been a rendezvous for adventurers in Africa for over a century.

The ambience of the hotel is steeped in that history with all suites decorated in the gracious Edwardian style of Zimbabwe’s colonial era. Small executive meetings and private dining facilities are easily arranged for those who wish to combine a little business with a lot of pleasure, and all in a secluded and discreet environment.

A large swimming pool, two tennis courts, a library, reading rooms and chapel are part of the complex. Golfers can enjoy 18 holes on the championship course of the nearby sister hotel, Elephant Hills Resort.

But it is the Victoria Falls Hotel that remains the major attraction for visitors. Waking up to the sound of “the smoke that thunders”, seeing the sun rise beneath the mist of one of the seven natural wonders of the world and the lunar rainbow at night, all the while soaking up the history and ambience of a bygone era, is more than unforgettable – it is unique.

Toka Leya Camp

Toka Leya Camp

Toka Leya Camp is a 12 bedded luxury tented camp is located 12kms upstream from Victoria Falls and overlooking the mighty Zambezi River Overlooking the mighty Zambezi River and some of its islands is Toka Leya Camp, consisting of 12 spacious en-suite safari-style tents. Wooden walkways snake between the units and main area, limiting our footprint on this pristine area.

Tent interiors at Toka Leya Camp boast cool wooden flooring, tasteful, uncluttered African décor in earthy hues, climate-control for a cool summer sanctuary, expansive wooden deck from which to soak up the views of the Zambezi River, often to the sights and sounds of birds, elephant and grunting pods of hippo. The islands in front of camp are intriguing and form part of the braided channel of the Zambezi River with several rapids, a main channel and dense vegetation.

The eastern side and main area of camp is under a shady canopy of jackalberry, knobthorn and waterberry trees. The western side is in a more open setting – an ancient baobab tree is the focal point and panoramic Zambezi vistas. Family units are positioned to offer quiet seclusion.

The camp’s dining, lounge and bar areas offer ample space for relaxation and are complemented by an infinity pool, with meals served on the sundeck, the pool deck and dining room all overlooking the Zambezi. The novel pizza oven is a great hit with our younger visitors! A curio shop exhibits a fine selection of local crafts.

Activities (on fully inclusive rate) at Toka Leya Camp include a tour of the Victoria Falls on the Zambian side, game drives within Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, river cruises, fishing excursions and guided nature walks. Tours of Livingstone town and museum and visits to Mkuni Market and a local village are all outstanding ways of learning about the people and culture of this part of Zambia. Other activities on offer in the area at an additional charge include sunset cruises, helicopter flights, micro-lighting, canoeing, jet boating, and white water rafting.

Game drives into the Mosi-oa-Tunya Park offer sightings of general game species such as buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and impala. White rhino have been reintroduced into the park and the occasional predator is also seen. There is rich birdlife here too, including several sought-after species such as African Finfoot, Half-collared Kingfisher, African Skimmer (seasonal), Schalow’s Turaco and Rock Pratincole (seasonal). Good birding can be enjoyed within the confines of Toka Leya Camp itself, on boat cruises and out on game drives.

The Zambezi River offers some fishing opportunities and tiger fishing is an unforgettable challenge for keen fishermen, particularly during the warmer months (October – December). There are several varieties of bream (Tilapia) which are a good catch.

The Royal Livingstone Hotel

The Royal Livingstone Hotel

The Royal Livingstone Hotel is a luxurious 5 star hotel situated on the Zambian side of the Victoria Falls.

The hotel stretches along the banks of the Zambezi River, just a short walk to the entrance of The Victoria Falls.

It’s named in honor of the explorer Dr. David Livingstone, and it’s interior design reflects the elegance of days gone by, using an African architectural style.

Royal Livingstone consist of 17 colonial-style buildings, with large verandas. The main hotel building incorporates the lounge, restaurant and bar.

Translated – The Smoke that Thunders – is the local name for the Victoria Falls. The world-famous cascade of water provides the baseline for your journey into colonial sophistication. Its fine spray may be seen like a cloud across the bushveld, throwing rainbows hundreds of feet in the air. On the forested banks of the great Zambezi River, upstream of the mighty cataract where it thunders into the Batoka Gorge, is The Royal Livingstone. In its cool lounges and shaded verandas, you will encounter the elegance and luxury of an earlier, more courteous age

The rooms are two-story clusters and each cluster comprises approximately 10 en-suite air-conditioned rooms, offering private balconies or terraces. Interior furnishings accentuate the influences of Africa translated into a cultured sumptuousness that reflects the essence of African Bush life. Natural light invades the bathrooms, as the luxurious sized showers allow natural light to filter through a milk-glass window.

Activities in the area

The area around Livingstone and Victoria Falls has become known the world over for the many adventure activities on offer. These are some of the most popular activities that can be enjoyed in Livingstone.

Zambezi Sundowner cruises

The Zambezi River is the central figure in many of the activities offered in Vic Falls. The most renowned of these activities is without a doubt the Sundowner Cruise. This activity is inclusive of transfers, drinks and snacks.

There is something magical about relaxing on the water, sipping on a drinks and waiting for the sun to set. This area provides for most memorable sunsets and fantastic photographic opportunities. Game is often encountered on the cruises, including Elephant and Hippo.

Elephant Back Safaris

One of the most popular activity in the Victoria Falls area. Guests get a chance to get up close and personal with the majestic African Elephant. Morning and afternoon safaris include a chance to ride an elephant as well as an informative interaction.

White river rafting

The original adrenalin activity offered in Livingstone is still as popular as ever. The best time to raft is when the water levels are low – around September to December. Rafting usually stops between March and end of July, due to safety regulations, but it is entirely dependant on water levels. This is an experience of a lifetime and there is even a lift to get you out of the gorge.

Lion encounter

Walk with the African savannah’s top predator under the watchful eyes of a guide. A must for anyone who is facinated by lions, but please note this activity cannot be undertaken by children of 15 years or anyone under 1.5m tall

Flight of angels – Helicopter flight

Experience the magnificence of the Falls like a bird. Pure adrenalin, but oh so amazing to fly slowly over the spray of the Falls and to be part of the scenery.

The Kingdom Hotel

The Kingdom Hotel

Quatermains, The Rapid Pool, The Wild Thing and The Pit sound like the titles of movies or books not quite suitable for all ages. They are in fact the names of the four bars in African Sun’s closest hotel to the Victoria Falls, The Kingdom at Victoria Falls.

This is a fun-filled resort hotel aimed unashamedly at the tourist who wants to take in the majesty and excitement of one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World as well as enjoy a holiday adventure as part of a group, with someone special, with the children, or as a single traveller.

Complete with its own food court offering a wide choice of relaxing or quick meals, suiting all ages, The Kingdom at Victoria Falls also offers three swimming pools and a toddlers pool, a children’s play area and, for the ladies, planning a “night on the town” or a visit to the resort’s own casino, a spa and beauty parlour.

Stunning architecture, which echoes the Victoria Falls but draws on the ancient Kingdom of Munhumutapa, with great domes, pillars, and bridges over the many water features, belies the fact that the resort is run on very traditional African Sun lines, with no compromises on the highest levels of products and guest service.

One of only three ISO-accredited hotels in Zimbabwe (the other two being its sister hotels, The Victoria Falls Hotel and the Elephant Hills Resort), its fun-filled atmosphere gives guests a unique blend of African tradition and Western ideas.

The Kingdom Hotel Zimbabwe has 294 rooms reflect its target market of families, groups, couples and singles. There are four suites; 112 rooms have king-size beds; 102 queen-size; 34 have king size and bunk beds; and 40 have twin beds and bunk beds.

The Leambe conference room can hold up to 80 people and the Thuli boardroom is designed for smaller business groups of up to 14.

The Kingdom at Victoria Falls is situated within the Victoria Falls National Park, a World Heritage Site, and the Zambezi National Park with its many attractions including elephant riding and game viewing is nearby.

Bungee jumping from the famous Victoria Falls Bridge, as well as the Flight of the Angels (an aerial look at the Victoria Falls) white-water (white knuckle as well) rafting and sundowner cruises on the Zambezi River can all be arranged by the hotel staff.

The famous statue of the first white man to see the Victoria Falls, David Livingstone, is only a short walk from the Kingdom Hotel Zimbabwe. What would he have made of this, perhaps the most spectacular of African Sun’s offerings?
