Drakensburg Kwazulu Natal

Drakensberg Mountains

The Drakensberg mountains of South Africa or uKhahlamba (the Barrier of Spears) is a 200-kilometre-long mountainous wonderland and world heritage site.

The largest proportion of the Drakensberg area falls in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.

The Drakensberg Mountains, with their awe-inspiring basalt cliffs, snowcapped in winter, tower over riverine bush, lush yellowwood forests and cascading waterfalls, form a massive barrier separating KwaZulu-Natal from the Kingdom of Lesotho.

The only road access to the Drakensberg is via Sani Pass, which at the top, boasts the highest pub on Africa, 3 000 metres above sea level.

The uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park has outstanding natural beauty, Africa’s highest mountain range south of Kilimanjaro, a fascinating and ancient geology, some of the rarest animals in the world – and the largest, richest and most concentrated series of rock art in Africa.

The Northern and Central Drakensberg area has some of the most beautiful scenery that can be imagined. The area falls into four valleys, beginning with the Champagne Valley in the Central Berg, through the Cathedral Peak and Didima Valley, then theRoyal Natal National Park and Amphitheatre Valley, and finally the Middledale Pass Valley in the Northern Berg. Each of the four valleys has its own kind of beauty and character; all have magnificent mountain views.

The San/Bushmen

The San people or Bushmen first populated this area of the Drakensberg and 17 shelters and over 4000 Bushmans paintings are to be found in Drakensberg caves and cliff overhangs.

The Boer War Battlesites

The Drakensberg Mountains form a backdrop to Ladysmith and Colenso, towns which featured highly during the Boer War. Both towns have museums of great interest to students of this conflict.

The Drakensberg is easily accessible from Johannesburg, and remains a popular self drive destination.   For those avid Hikers, the Drakensberg offers the most beautiful walks and scenery.
