The Phantom Forest Eco Reserve, on the southern Cape coast of South Africa, in the heart of the magnificent Garden Route… whispers a very special magic.

Nestling in the Afromontane Forest, just seven kilometres from Knysna, with endless views, shared only with our Fish Eagles, the large and elevated luxury ‘tree suites’ are an African celebration of colour and textures.

Experience the evocative sounds… scents… and tastes of Africa… at their very best!

Arrived at Gatehouse ~ met by Bush pig sculpture, Frank and Furter! Transferred to Bush vehicle ~ our Phantom adventure has begun!

We heard a Fish Eagle cry, and a door softly closed… the door of a rushed & noisy world.

What bliss…to be at one with Nature in all her glory ~ sounds, scents, the glory of a Knysna Loerie in flight ~ the fleeting glimpse of the shy Bushbuck…. the heart stopping sunsets…the symphony of birdsong greeting the African dawn…

Privately owned, within 137 hectares of nature reserve on the Knysna River, the Phantom Forest offers a unique bio-diversity of Afromontane forest, Cape coastal fynbos and estuarine wetland. There are over 150 bird species, bush pig, bushbuck, grysbok, the rare blue duiker (one of Africa’s smallest antelope), and a variety of smaller game.

Emphasis is placed on the use of sustainable methods of construction. Alien vegetation, gleaned directly from our eco-restoration programme, has been utilised in floors, furniture, roofs and boardwalks. Drawing inspiration directly from nature, a harmonious balance has been created, from ragged thatch rising into the forest canopy, to wood shingle and a ‘freshwater’ nature pool. In true eco-terms, man’s intrusion in our wonderful natural environment has been graciously accepted by both flora and fauna.

Classic tree suites… with indigenous tree names such as Monkey Plum and Turkey Berry, these elevated tree-suites comprise… entrance area, bedroom & sitting room, stunning end-glass gable, sensuous bathroom with glass roof over double-ended bath, twin basins, separate shower room with bidet & loo, and relaxing deck.

Natural fabrics in subtle creams, earth tones & black, echo the Xhosa style. All enjoy views over the Knysna Lagoon or forest.

Keeping in line with exclusivity and adding substance to the word privacy, 6 serenely indulgent Classic tree-suites have been created in harmonious balance with nature.

The Upper Tree Camp Suites are intimate and romantic…the perfect honeymoon hideaway… with two double ended baths!

Count the stars together in the jetted outdoor bath, on your private deck…or cosy up on the indoor daybed with a glass of wine or two…Arum, Erica, Strelizia and Watsonia are named after species in our Fynbos Floral Kingdom.

Bathe in luxury to the symphony of birdsong or the quiet contemplation of the African sky.

Our Moroccan Tree Suites are in synergy with our theme of touch and taste Africa. These fabulous suites are decorated with a distinctly North African feel. From the sensuous touch of silk and velvet to the visual beauty of mosaic and handcrafted lamps.
