Mpumalanga Adventure Activities

Whilst Mpumalanga is recognised as the iconic wildlife and bush destination, the wonderful climate and spectacular natural attributes of the province have created the perfect ingredients for adventure. And adventure is not new to Mpumalanga – borne testamony by the legends of wagon trails, battlefields that scar the region and wonderful sites and artifacts of ancient civilisations that dot the landscape. This is frontier country and home of some of the most amazing adventure opportunities you can experience.

White Water Rafting

White Water River Rafting

Mpumalanga more than makes up for the lack of ocean through the whitewater rafting and kayak experiences on offer. And where else do you stand a chance of being crocodile dinner while sleeping off a hard days rafting? This is wild frontier country!

The Sabie River is a pristine, very clean river, and a number of operators run half and full-day packages on a section of the lower sections. The 20 rapids on this 8km stretch are generally Grade 2-3 (kid-friendly), but can increase depending on rainfall. The trips are generally interspersed with ‘bum-sliding’, swimming and wave surfing at a spot called Lions Rock.

The Blyde River is an awesome experience and can be extreme, depending on water levels. Rafting the Blyderiver will earn you the distinction of having rafted one of the most spectacular rivers in the world. The canyon is one of the most unspoilt wilderness areas in the country. While the paddling is demanding, you get the chance to enjoy breathtaking scenery, including the famous Three Rondavels. 1 and 2 day trips are offered, with an overnight stop at a rustic camp (no kidding, but it is iconic) at the foot of the iconic Three Sisters. The only way out is a boat trip across the Blydepoort Dam at the end – try and get a detour to the Tufa Waterfall.

Hot Air Ballooning

The horizon glows in pre-dawn anticipation of the sun. The air is crisp, and the silence is punctuated by the sounds of nature waking up – and the occasional blast of the powerful burners as you drift over the green canopy below. Welcome to the once-in-a-lifetime thrill of hot air ballooning, as you experience lighter-than-air flight over the magnificant Mpumalanga landscape.

Because of the ideal Mpumalanga climate, balloons operate all year round, and there is minimal disruption due to adverse weather conditions. The balloon trip is usually broken into 3 parts, with minor variations depending on the operator. First comes the early morning briefing and prepping, with hot coffee and rusks. Following is the actual flight, which lasts about an hour. The last part is the post-flight ritual, which usually includes champagne and a slap-up breakfast as part of the package.
