At Elewana Elsa’s Kopje luxury blends effortlessly with Meru’s remote and rugged beauty. Named after the lioness made famous by George and Joy Adamson’s biographical book and film “Born Free”, Elewana Elsa’s Kopje remains one of the most elegant lodges in Africa, in one of the most spectacular settings.

Almost invisible to the eye as you approach its home on Mughwango Hill, Elsa’s Kopje blends into the rocky crags of the “kopje” (small hill), above the site of George Adamson’s campsite. Every cottage is the ultimate ‘room-with-a-view’, uniquely designed and crafted, incorporating the natural features of the rocky hillside.

A wild and semi-arid landscape, dotted with doum palms and traversed by weaving green lines of the 13 life-giving rivers, Meru National Park offers wonderful game watching opportunities, and is one of the best locations to view rhino in their natural habitat.

Cottage Suites

Nestled into the hillside and overlooking the vast plains of Meru National Park, each of Elsa’s Kopje’s six open-fronted cottages are uniquely designed incorporating the features of the kopje, and enjoying a magnificent view.

Each cottage consists of a main bedroom, ensuite bathroom and sitting area/private deck.

Five doubles, one twin. Two cottages offer day/extra beds to make triples.

Honeymoon Cottages

Africa is undeniably romantic, and three Honeymoon Cottages at Elsa’s Kopje offer the ultimate in romance and seclusion.

Two of the Honeymoon Cottages feature a main double bedroom, ensuite bathroom, a small private deck and gorgeous outdoor bath.

The third honeymoon cottage is a large three-leveled luxury suite, with main double bedroom, bathroom, open sitting room and a private deck.

Day & Night (pre-dinner) Game Drives

The Elsa’s Kopje guides know their backyard intimately. All the guides are Bronze, Silver and Gold level KPSGA certified.

Meru’s rich wildlife diversity includes rare species specific to Northern Kenya, such as Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, as well as an abundance of common game. An 84km2 sanctuary at the heart of the park is home to some 70+ Black and White Rhino.

Guided Bush Walks

Take the time to leave the car behind and enjoy a slower pace. Talk a walk up to the very top of Mughwango Hill, enjoying a 360 degree view from snow-capped Mt Kenya in the west to the vast Meru plains to the east.

Bush Breakfasts

Alongside a freshly brewed coffee, drink in the sights and sounds of the African bush over a full breakfast, served with a view over the plains or along the Tana river.

Sundowners

“Sundowners” are an old tradition after a day of safari: stop and watch the spectacular sunset with, traditionally, a gin and tonic in hand.

Line Fishing (Catfish, Tilapia and Barbel)

Take your rod, afternoon tipple with some canapés and a good book, and settle on the palm lined banks of one of Meru’s many rivers. The fishing is fun, with plentiful catfish, tilapia and barbell.

Visits to the local school and community

Elsa’s Kopje works with closely with the local community, and there are ways that you can get involved. For example, visit the Ura Gate Primary School that is supported by Elsa’s Kopje.

School visit included in Game Package accommodation but guests are encouraged to donate towards ongoing projects, or purchase school books and supplies.
